In five years, I want to be a recognised writer and director in the Australian film industry, with a fully established production company that produces an array of productions focused on amplifying female and Australian voices.

Opportunities

​As Dally (2008) discusses, the low cost and ease of modern movie-making technology (such as digital cameras and smart phones) has made filmmaking more accessible to the amateur. Due to rapid advancements in technology, there has been a significant reduction in equipment costs for shooting, editing, and post-production, with software for high-quality production increasingly being developed.

The Australian film sector is receiving a significant boost in funding from the government, creating many opportunities for budding filmmakers and enabling the industry to target quality and culturally important Australian film content (Screen Australia, 2023)

Film production in Queensland is rapidly increasingly in popularity with more big-budget international and Australian films being shot in the state, largely due to the governments recent lifting of the film location tax offset to 30% (TIQ, 2022). Therefore, opportunities for employment and industry connections in my home location are growing.

My time at university provides me with easy online and on-site access to film equipment, editing software and labs, facilities and locations, professional guidance from tutors and lecturers, varying library services, and other like-minded individuals either studying the same course or beneficial areas of study.

The popularity and accessibility of social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Twitter, can help to network, promote, and share my creative brand with a large audience.

According to Bridgestock (2013), social networking is one of the four key capabilities creative practitioner's require for success. As such, networking opportunities in the film industry are abundant, with programs, social events, functions, and workshops being widespread.

The rise of digital (online) distribution and the rapid growth of streaming services such as Netflix, Stan, Binge etc., are lowering barriers for aspiring filmmakers (Ryan & Hearn, 2010).

A new national cultural policy called 'Revive' will impose local content quotas on streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney, and Amazon Prime Video, as of July 1, 2024. This aims to prevent Australian storytelling from being 'drowned out' by overseas programming, providing opportunities for local filmmakers and 'homegrown' content to be seen more prevalently on Australian screens (Brzeski, 2023).
Threats

With the rapid advancement of technology, it can be daunting to have to constantly ensure that you are up-to-date on platforms, programs, equipment, and industry standards etc. If effort/attention isn’t placed in being aware of these, it can be easy to fall behind in the industry.

Hours in the industry can be brutally intensive and/or irregular, risking burn-out, stress, an un-healthy work-life balance, or long periods of unemployment.

Recognition may be difficult to achieve with beginner jobs being unpaid or no credits in films etc.

Recent data collected by Screen Australia highlights the barriers of entry into the film industry are clearly higher for women to enter and develop a sustainable career and tell female-centred stories than they are for men, with women currenty making up 27% of directors and writers in Australian feature films (Hart et.al., 2021; French, 2022)

The health and welfare of workers in the entertainment industry is worse than the general population of Australia due to current industry conditions (Cooper, 2017).

A recent study conducted by Victoria University uncovered that the entertainment industry is known for possessing an extremely competitive culture, as there are more people seeking employment than there are opportunities. Many within the industry have reported this has created a culture of criticism, from external critics as well as fellow artists, creating an increasingly un-supportive environment and therefore contributing to a rise in mental health issues (Eynde et.al., 2016)

The advancement of AI presents challenges to screenwriters as its unregulated use holds the potential to affect writers' livelihoods negatively, threatening their compensation and working conditions (Hines, 2023).

'In Focus Workshops' in Brisbane provides personalised video production courses and the accessibility of equipment and experienced individuals at my university can also be utilised through reaching out and organising sessions to further learn. This is essential as "a director should possess some technical skills involved with camera work in order to elevate their craft and ensure the crew captures a scene in a way that will bring their vision to life, assisting in shaping their distinctive voice (Wolf, 2021). Additionally, this also flexes my creativity and personal interest in the discipline, as well as improves transdiciplinarity.

Provides financial capital while also adding credibility to my work and CV as a professional. Also covers career self management/enterprise and entrepreneurship capabilities.

This will further develop my craft as well as strengthen my professional connections with writers in the local screen industry.

Explore internship opportunities through QUT InPlace and apply if eligible for as early as Semester 2 2024. These do not have to be through QUT but can be self-managed and individually sourced. Allows industry experience alongside study, as well as builds an industry rapport early on. Beneficial for networking with professionals and provides stepping stones into future careers/job opportunities as part of WIL units.

Enrol in AMB207 Entertainment Marketing in a Digital World. This is important as film marketing strategies are a critical component of the filmmaking process. Filmmakers who are able to successfully market their own films and gain film exposure typically find the most success in their career (Walker, 2021). This also furthers my skills and knowledge as a producer and in production management, as well as understanding current market trends.

This will strengthen my industry rapport as a capable worker and increase my employability through trusted word-of-mouth.

Save-up for film equipment that is relevant to industry standards. Expensive and above-amateur gear is important for creating higher-standard film productions for my company. This will help increase material capital and improve the standard of my work, therefore improving my employability and the professionalism of my company. Aim to have enough funds by the start of Sem 2.

Enter the Australian Women's Film Festival in the 'One to Watch Award' category. This festival is especially important in relation to my career goal, as its focus is on amplifying female voices. Allows a great way to expand creative brand and credibility/recognition as well as network with other female practitioners in the industry. Also beneficial to practice screening my creative work for criticism and accepting feedback. If successful, I can use the prize money to ease the financial challenge of my career, putting it towards my productions and improving my material capital.

Collaborate with experienced marketing professionals or agencies. This can develop my expertise in marketing and promotion which are integral skills for a sole trader career. I can then refine the marketing strategies currently in place for my production company.

Once completed, enter (hopefully) funded short-film into the Australian Women's Film Festival (and other film festivals if applicable). Film festivals are crucial for career progression in the industry as "prize winners gain industry attention and the ability to advertise their prizes in publicity campaigns" (Squire 2016, p263).

Apply for QUT's short-term exchange program prior to 2025 Sem 2 commencement and travel overseas during the summer semester break to build intercultural literacy and gain global perspectives. During this time, also continue working on scripts to flex creativity and for personal interest. Travelling overseas provides a better understanding of international markets and also cultural identities. This can influence my understanding of other works and open up new avenues of film to branch into.

If a screening at this festival is successfully achieved, the credibility of my company and work will be propelled into the limelight. Due to its highly prestigious regard in the film industry, my career could experience a major turning point. Streaming services have considerable advantages in terms of audience reach, as they allow content to be accessible worldwide (Benjamins, 2018). Services such as Netflix are also adopting local content quotas in Australia to elevate Australian stories, which provides me with an increased chance of success (Brzeski, 2023)
